Water softeners for residential and commercial applications in Cyprus. Correct sizing starts with measured water hardness, daily consumption and peak flow; resin volume or cabinet size alone does not tell you whether a unit suits the building.

Confirm that hardness is the problem

A water softener based on ion exchange is designed primarily to reduce hardness minerals. It is not the same as a sediment filter, carbon filter or reverse-osmosis system. If the complaint is taste, sediment, salinity or a specific contaminant, use water analysis to identify the actual treatment need before selecting equipment.

Size from hardness and consumption

Useful inputs include inlet hardness, average daily water use, number of occupants or process demand, and the required service flow. These determine how much hardness load the system must treat between regenerations.

A unit that is too small may regenerate very frequently or struggle at peak flow. Excessive oversizing can also be inefficient. Use the manufacturer's capacity data and programming method for the selected resin/control valve.

Check installation and regeneration requirements

A softener needs suitable inlet/outlet connections, isolation/bypass, drainage for regeneration, electrical supply where required and space to service the valve and refill salt. Confirm the permitted drain arrangement and maximum operating pressure/temperature from the product documentation.

Where pressure is already marginal, include the softener's pressure loss when assessing the overall water-pressure system.

Plan commissioning and maintenance

Set the controller using the actual hardness and system capacity according to the manufacturer instructions. Maintain salt and other consumables as specified, and check the installation periodically for correct regeneration and bypass operation.

Do not use a universal regeneration interval: demand-based systems should be programmed from the real application.

What to send for softener selection

Send a recent hardness result if available, daily consumption or number of users, required peak flow, pipe size, available pressure, installation dimensions and photos of the proposed location. Mention any existing storage tank, booster pump or filtration stages.

Thomas Moudouros Ltd can then compare softener capacity, valve configuration and installation requirements against the actual water conditions before quotation.
